Friday Finds: Seaside

I was away last week and spent a few days in Scarborough (you can read about my trip here) and so it seems apt to choose a seaside theme for this weeks Friday Finds. After all,

I do like to be beside the sea side,
I do like to be beside the sea,
I do like stroll along the prom, prom, prom
Where the brass band plays tiddly um pom pom
So just let me be beside the seaside,
I'll be beside myself with glee,
There are lots of girls beside
I should like to be beside
beside the seaside, beside the sea.

That was a song I learnt during music at school, and now every time I go to the seaside I find myself singing that song, because I do like to be beside the seaside.

Once again, there was no shortage of choice on Etsy, so I quickly found a huge range of fantastic items to feature. In no particular order, here are just a few of my favourites.

For those who love a pretty soap, this beautiful seaside soap made by Soapychica is almost too good to use! The hand carved design not only looks like it's straight from the sea, it's fragranced with seaweed and juniper.

For a seaside theme/ beach party check out this colourful nautical bunting. I love the simple yet bold designs, and polka dot fabric. GracesFavours have selected a really cute ribbon too, her attention to detail clearly goes a long way!

The coral colour and patterned imprint of this ring makes me want to go snorkelling, so see if I can spot any starfish amongst the reefs (I've never been snorkelling, but that's how I imagine it, along with lots of exotic fishes!). The bold bright design by damson tree pottery definitely captures my eye!

This felted seascape design is super cute, and is a lovely little piece to brighten up any room. Aisling Dezines used her may talents, including hand felting, crochet and knitting to create this piece.

If you are partial to sailor inspired goodies, then check out this lovely striped anchor tote bag by Claire Mason 82. I love the fabric she's used, and not only is it pretty, it's extremely useful!

Little Cove Cottage is the talent behind these ocean wave gift tags. She has added a touch of vintage inspiration with the soft sand coloured ribbon. They almost look too good to use! Take the time to have a peek at the other lovely gift tags and cards available.

This last item is a little cheeky, as it's my dolphin fridge magnet, but hey, it fits the theme, and he's a happy little chappy who likes showing off!

Happy Browsing!

Spring, Cambridge and Punting!

I had hoped that the rains had gone, but the grey sky isn't very convincing. Even Cambridge, away from the hills of the Peak District, nestled amongst flat fields and fens couldn't escape a downpour.

I was in cambridge visiting my oldest friend, Rhian, (we've know each other since we were 11) so it was lovely to visit her and have a catch up! She even bought some of my earrings! After a good catch up over dinner and drinks on Friday, and shopping (there's a fantastic stall at the market selling a huge range of tas and coffee's, a must visit every time I go) followed by a pub crawl, we managed to fit in some time for a picnic and punting, albeit in the rain.

When the punts are on the river (they're stored off the water over winter) the 'Cam' is never free of punts. Tourists can be found having a tour in extra wide tourist punts, propelled  along by experts - you have to take a test to get a job doing so apparently - or hire the standard sized punts for some river play!

Rhian and me overlooking the Cam
Students can be found with picnincs, pimms and lemonade, and some lucky ones can punt for free if their college has a punt. Rhian is one such student, as a member of Clare college while studying for a pHD in Chemistry, she can book the college punt, so we always take advantage when I visit.

First up punting was her boyfriend, Julian, who with his Rugby player muscles had no trouble taking us to Jesus Green, perfect for a picnic. Easily avoiding most other punts, and stearing uder the many bridges it was a relaxing ride, perfect pre-picnic. After a feast of baguette, various cheeses, meats, and olives, all washed down with shloer, Rhian took her turn at the back.

By this time it was raining, and she was punting against the current, but she still managed to avoid most other punts, and make our way beneath the bridges on our return journey. We made slow progress, (at one point we nearly stopped!) but then punting is hard work, as I was about to find out.

I have punted before, but at Oxford not cambridge, and there is a difference. The punts are slightly different shapes, it's essentialy the other way around, the river is quiter in Oxford (as the punt houses are more spread out) and it's shallower.

Anyway, I took the pole from Rhian, and braced myself for stepping onto the back of the punt. (There are no sides on the punting platform as it's level with the top of them). A little bit of a wobble, but thankfully no splash! Then it was down to the business of pushing the pole to the river bed and the punt along with it. I must admit I missed the river bed a couple of times, it was fairly deep, but got us moving in generally the right direction. I zig-zagged my way along, reqularly bumping the bank before steering away and then repeating the pattern (I definately punted to the right). We had a brush with some trees. twice. There are weeping willows along the bank and it's very easy to end up under them for novices like me. (It's quite fun watching people get caught under them!)  Eventually, after quite a bicep work out we had reached the side stream where the punts were kept, and managed to steer quite smoothly in, along with a little assistance. It was lucky the stream was to the right, that was definatley the way I keot trying to go!

After all the rain and work, we went back to Rhian's for a very welcome cup of tea, but all of that punting gave me inspiration for this keyring. What do you think?

Tardis Keyring Kit Complete!

Hello!

I must say, I am VERY pleased that today so far is a break from the incessant rain we have had here in Sheffield for the past week, I hope it continues!

To celebrate, I am launching my tardis cross stitch keyring kit! In my previous post I talked about designing it, now I have completed one and the full kit (including full colour chart and instructions) is available for only £4.50 on my website.

What do you think of my effort? The photo isn't the best unfortunately, as the keyring reflects the light, but I think it's fairly true to the tardis, and hopefully you can make out the 'POLICE BOX' lettering also. It's now available on my Etsy Shop.

It's stitched onto 14 count Aida (for you non-stitchers that means 14 cross stitches per inch) using DMC embroidery threads. I then glued some backing paper to the reverse of the cross stitch using PVA glue so that the back of the keyring looks pretty too! I managed to find this in my stash, which I thought was very apt for this Dr. Who inspired keyring.

I hope you like it!

In other news, My work colleague Heather has given me Herman, a German friendship  sour dough cake which you grow and add ingredients too, before splitting 4 ways, giving 3 to friends to grow on and baking the Fourth quarter for yourself! I'll take some photo's and let you know how he's growing later in the week!

I'm also busy stitch, stitch, stitching away as I have just received a bulk order, so no new items for a while. Luckily however, I made a few just before the bulk order was confirmed, so Photo's will be coming soon on my facebook page!

Anyway, I'd best get busy...

In Progress... Tardis Keyring Cross Stitch Kit

A friend of mine asked me ages ago to design a Tardis key ring for him. Ashamedly I must admit that I got side tracked by designing my cross stitch jewellery and forgot until we were in the Pub on Friday when he said something along the lines of

'Have you designed a Tardis key ring yet? More people like Dr Who than like Goldfish' (My most recent addition to my website was a Goldfish keyring Kit).

'No...' Came my slightly sheepish reply 'I forgot that I said I would...' (this is a hazard of conversations held over  a few pints of ale, especially given my bad memory!)

So I spent the weekend getting busy digging and sowing (carrots, beetroot, lettuce and garlic) in the garden along with a couple of pubs and darts games (Chris beat me twice, but only on the doubling out - not bad given the unfair disadvantage I have of him being a foot taller and having arms as long-limbed as an Orang-utan), and thought nothing more about my promise.

The rain of this Monday morning has however, brought with it my promise, so in my lunch break at my day job (crafting has to fit around being a cell biologist) I goggled 'Dr Who Tardis' for a good picture to base my design on. what do you think?!

Not an exact copy, but hopefully close enough! What do you think? All that I need to do now is make sure I've got the right colours and stitch it to check that the chart is right! That part will have to wait until tomorrow night, as I'm going beer tasting at Shakespeares tonight for St Georges day. I'll let you know how it goes...

Happy Stitching
