Friday Finds: Barbeque!

Last weekend I hosted my first Barbeque of the year! (And my second!) It was lovely to relax in the garden with my parents (BBQ no.1) and then my friends (BBQ no.2) smelling the charcoal and grilled meat. delicious. I have missed BBQ's over the long winter months, and I definitely intend to make the most of my garden by having more Barbeques soon. have you been making the most of the sun with a tasty meaty BBQ? Sadly I have none planned for this weekend, so instead I've discovered some fabulous BBQ inspired items on etsy to tide me over.

You can't have a Barbeque without fire. Unfortunately most BBQ's don't look particularly attractive. If you want to make your Barbeque a garden feature then how about this stylish decahedron Barbeque from Dog Biscuit Designs. They also make square and pentagonal fire pits to increase the heat!

These saucy BBQ pin up girls are busy keeping the smoke down. Instead, turn up the heat by using these vintage cards by In Grips We Trust as invitations to your Barbeque, or as a cheeky birthday card for your friend who can't get enough of Barbeques!

There is something about barbeques that draws all the men to it. It's probably the meat, the fire, and the long tongs and pokers required. If your dad has a bit of a BBQ reputation (in a good way) then why not splash out this Fathers Day and let him know he's the best at the BBQ with this apron from Direct23Ltd. With a bit of luck it'll encourage him to use his skills more often!

Rustic craft design is the place to go for some personalised BBQ tools. What more could a BBQ enthusiast want than their own special set of tongs, fork and spatula, all engraved especially for them.

When the weather's not so nice you can still treat yourself to a burger. Head to Nicola Luke for this fabulous felt creation that can be used as a pin cushion. Don't forget to check out her other tasty treats on Etsy and Facebook. Banana Split anyone?

Happy grilling!

Friday Finds: Vintage Cinema

I went to the cinema for the first time in months on Monday, (we saw The Hangover Part 3) which was pretty funny, so it was a good time all round. Anyway, my cinema trip is the inspiration between todays Friday finds theme.

Cinema's have changed a lot over the years, from the first silent black and white movies to todays 3D films and computerised special effects. Howver, when all is said and done the Hollywood of the past has always been portrayed as a very glamorous time. What's more, it's not just cinema buffs who appreciate vintage cinema and old movies. I know very little about cinema and it's past, but I definitely appreciate a lot of Hollywood film paraphernalia, such as these fantastic Etsy finds.

Add a touch of the abstract cinema with the golden age of cinema print by Lucius Art. It's cool and funky, perfect for adding a touch of the unusual to your walls.

Fans of Breakfast at Tiffany's will recognise the beautiful Audrey Hepburn adorning Fantasy Case's iPhone cover. This will give your everyday mobile a big injection of glamour.

If your planning a cinema/ movie themed party/ hen do/ stag do then make sure you head to cake a doodle doo for these cool cupcake cases. While you're there, check out the other styles available.

Fancy yourself behind the camera? Look no further than this vintage film camera pendant from Bling DIY. The crystal lens will give you some cinematic sparkle.

The collector inside you will love these vintage Hollywood starlet cigarette cards from Toast and Marmalade. It's easy to use your imagination to create a fabulously glamorous display suitable for showing off these talented ladies.

Friday Finds: Vintage Pin up

Those of you who follow me on facebook will probably already know that I went to a vintage make up class on Tuesday evening. I was going for the vintage look at the weekend too, although this time it was cupcake decorating! I'm not normally very vintage, but there are quite a few things that I really love about Vintage fashion, such as the 1940's and 50's dresses (I love the cut of them and wish I had more in my wardrobe). Lots of the retro home décor and accessories are really cute, and of course, there's the Vintage Pin=Up girl! I love the sassy sexiness and fun loving energy that they exude, so it's no surprise that Vintage Pin ups are this weeks Friday Finds theme!

I love the cute sauciness of the vintage pin up girl on these cute plug earrings by Plug Club. The subtle teasing and sense of style means they will work with any rockabilly outfit.

I have a bit of a cheeky personality, (we all do really) which is why I think these retro ceramic coasters are fabulous! Its hard to pick a favourite from Baubles and Kitsch's designs, but I think mines the top one, what's yours?

If its a statement piece you want, then look no further than this striking limited edition artwork print from Emma Young Art. It's perfect for adding a touch of glamour to a luxurious boudoir!

Cheeky Rosie has hand painted this alluring vintage burlesque girl onto an everyday tote bag. With this in your hand, even boring every jobs can be glamorous!

If you like making your own wall art, or just enjoy cross stitching like me then head over to Wicked Lady for this fabulous chart. With a pattern as seductive as this, you'll be finished in no time!

A more subtle homage to the vintage era is this beautiful necklace by che655. I'm intrigued to know who this lovely lady is blowing her kiss to...

Thanks for reading, and if there is a theme you would like to see, or if you have a product you'd like me to feature next week, please leave a comment below!

Cupcake Decorating!

I spent my Saturday afternoon in a lady's conservatory learning a few techniques about how to decorate cupcakes in a vintage style with a couple of friends. All cupcakes, icing and tools were provided, so it was a lovely way of learning some new techniques! She does other cupcake decorating classes too, check out her website for more information.

At the end of the class, we got to take our beautifully decorated cupcakes home, and I have to say, they taste as good as they look! (although I didn't want to eat them at first as they look so good!)

First up was the bow. When we made the 'trousers' (the tails that hang down) we were a little dubious. Firstly it was really hard to get a straight edge or make it even (practise, practise, practise...) but as the bow came together and we dotted the top it looked lovely. What do you think?

Next up was the cupcake above with the ball on top (or nipple, according to one of our friends). This was the only cupcake that looked good without the top being cut off to make if flat, as the lines drew your eye to the top.

The third cupcake was flowers. I struggled with this the most, despite having cutters to cut the flower. It was the ball rolling to shape the petals. (I managed 1 1/2 flowers in the time my friends made 3 and 3 1/2!) However, I definitely want to practise this technique more as Its one of the prettiest and most delicate looking cupcake decoration. The fourth technique was creating a cameo, and this was the easiest as the sugar paste was pushed into a mold. The flower molds proved by far the post popular, and I love the contrast between the colours and the pearl effect from the piped icing that frames it.

The fifth technique was a brushing technique, we used flower cutters as an outline to then ice and brush towards the centre to create a 'feathered' effect. Our teacher found this very therapeutic, but we weren't so sure. It looks nice but I enjoyed making some of the others more, however, I also think it would look better if the colours were more contrasting. The sixth one was for us to do as we wanted, so I chose another Cameo, this time adorned with a few little flowers.

The cupcakes were all given to us in a lovely cupcake box. Which is your favourite?

Happy Decorating!

Friday Finds: Birds!

Have you ever wanted to fly away?

I have, and still do. While I like my job, have lovely friends and family, enjoy pottering around in my garden (if it ever stops raining) and decorating my house, there are times when I want to fly away from it all. It's natural after all, to want adventure, or escape, or relaxation, or simply something different.

While we have to be satisfied with the mundane, we can still dream of flying away like a bird, free to go where you want, these beautiful bird inspired items by some fantastic crafters could help your imagination to take flight.

Femmart has created this carefully sculpted birds nest and bird necklace. I love how the turquoise of the eggs contrasts and compliments the silver wrapped wire nest.

If you like to create things yourself, but could do with an artistic helping hand, then the beautiful bird design Graphique is a transfer to apply onto fabrics, so you can brighten up a tea towel, pillow or T-shirt. it will even work on paper too.

For a personal touch, look no further than NathalieVan's contemporary urban abstracts. The bold design is fabulously colourful, and the birds are custom painted for your family.

Raw Thread has designed this raven T-shirt for the man in your life. Bold, stark and simple, the T-shirt is also made from organic cotton, so not only will he look good, he'll be doing a bit for the environment too!

If you are a fellow crafter or a vintage seller, or simply love beautiful tags then take a moment to peruse Creative Visions Etsy Shop. I love the intricate border, and the subtle vintage colours.

If you are looking to sprucing up your walls then Cuma is the place to start. I adore cuteness of the birds flitting amongst the blossom, playing in the flowers and the birdcage. The vinyl wall sticker is also available in red, blue and orange.

Anyway, I'm off to fly away...
... in my head at least!

NEW PRODUCT: TULIP PENDANTS!

Hooray!

I've finallised my Pendant making technique, and here are the results! What do you think?

The Pink one was my first attempt, I love the variated thread as it adds extra depth. After finishing it I asked my boyfriend Chris what he thought.

Chris sounding puzzled 'Hm, yeah it looks nice'

Me 'It's a Tulip'

Chris 'Oh yes, I can see that now, I didn't realise it was a flower because it didn't have a stalk'

Tulip no. 2 was then made with a stalk! I think it does look better, so thanks Chris!

These unsual vintage style tulip necklaces are now for sale at the introductory price of only £9.00 on my facebook shop (normal price £10) which includes P&P. They are available in a range of colours, all made to order!

More pendants will be available in my shop soon, and at a Vintage and craft fair in Sheffield City Centre on May 19th!

Thanks for reading!

Aida Vs Evenweave...

Hello again!

I have been busy working on my hardanger kit (still ongoing so no pics yet) and it has inspired me to try stitching on evenweave fabric!

Now although I've been stitching for years, (on and off admittedly during my teenage years and university) I have never stitched on anything other than aida (with the exception of a tapestry kit). As I'm loving trying out new ways of stitching, I've realised that the background fabric is just as important (if not more) as the type of stitch used/skill of the stitcher.

This is very true, as while I consider myself a good cross stitcher, I have never stitched on anything smaller than 18 count aida (18 stitches per inch), so I decided to trial it, with results I am very pleased with!
The colours just seem to work, to give these earrings a lovely vintage look, and I think they look more professional. What do you think?

Conclusion: Evenweave wins!
I am now going to make a few more designs with evenweave, including ones with different stitches, more embroidery than cross stitch, and some seed bead detail!

As evenweave also comes in a wide array of colours, (which I discovered after a brief perusal of www.sewandso.co.uk) I need not be restricted to just one colour of background, which is great as colours are fantastic, and I aspire to learn how to use them for maximum effect! I can do everything I already am, and more besides on evenweave!

Of course, there is a downside, evenweave does require a little more skill, as there are more 'holes' and a standard cross stich will cover a 9 hole square instead of  a 4 hole square as with aida. (see below) which means I've had to do a little more unpicking than normal....

Still, the more fabrics I try, the more techniques I'll learn, and the more techniques I learn the more interesting things I can make, and the more things I can make, the more inspiration I could have, and so on, until I become a better stitcher!
